Simple SEO Research Makes Money Online

By Gill Taylor

Using SEO, search engine optimization, and keyword research is a rather simple and reproducible way to start making money on the internet. Let's look at the basics that every internet marketer worth their salt goes through.

Step 1: Get into the mind of your buyer -You can start by thinking about the overall intent and motivation of your potential buyer. Can you think about what questions they are asking? What are they trying to do? You should use all these questions and start doing some keyword research.

Remember that you get 2 types of buyers. The first is a more analytical thinker and tends to ask many how and what questions. How to make money online? What is the fastest way to make money? What is the safest way to start an online business? How do I get traffic?

Other prospects are more emotional and relational in their approach. Spontaneous and humanistic types are concerned with the experience and the results: best selling money ebook, most successful online business, internet marketing for newbies.

Start thinking like your potential customer Nearly all people want to make easy money and many people want to make money online. However, not all people want to start a business. So you would rather use the words that people use who want to make money, even though they probably have to start an online business to do so. Knowing where they are in the buying process will help you convert traffic into sales easier.

Step 2: Now start thinking a little wider -You can use a keyword analysing tool like Wordtracker Keyword Universe. You could use the keywords from step 1 and get more options by using the thesaurus option. Get some wider and broader terms around 'make money online'. Make sure that the new keyword phrases comply with the theme of your website, something in the line of 'get rich quick', start a home business' and 'work from home'. Just remember to include the buyer keywords, because quality keywords are worth more than many crappy keywords.

Step 3: Prioritize your keywords -When you prioritize your keywords you should look at how strong a buyer keywords it is as well as how much traffic it will bring. If your product represents enough value the buyer keywords you use will convert your website traffic into sales. Remember its fine to use keyword phrases that bring in low volumes of traffic with high money making potential. Optimise your pages and content for these long tail keyword phrases and you're sure to impress the search engines to no end. So answer your customers' questions and they will do the converting for you.

3 Tips For Better Google Rankings

Google now checks the year your domain name was first registered. This just makes sense. Those that care about their domain and their brand will register their domain for a long time.

This demonstrates commitment. Of course it's not very hard for a spammer to do the same but the upfront costs are just that little bit higher and might help act as a deterrent. If anything a short domain registration period will be yet another flag in the Google system that will keep certain sites away from top rankings. Hopefully it will be the spammers that trigger the penalty when combined with all the other spam flags they trigger.

If you are anything like me and you like to register domains for an "idea" you have for the future there is no way you will be investing in a 10 year registration for something you may never pursue. An idea is an idea and I know half of the domains I buy amount to nothing. However buying the domain also signifies *some* commitment to the project and on many occasions is the motivational spark I need to get the website built and a new project off the ground. A one or two year registration is not a significant cost. Securing a domain for 10 years is. The easy workaround is to initially register a domain for the minimum period, if things take off then renew the domain for a longer period. Simple.

Google now places huge emphasis on links. They want to see a slow, gradual increase to the number of incoming links to your websites. Links need to have a variety of anchor text phrases. If all your anchor links are the same you could get de-listed or lose ranking position.

Ahh, natural linking patterns. I've mentioned this before - Google in many ways destroyed what it relies on to create such a great search engine. Before Google linking patterns were very natural, organic with sites linking to each other in many different ways, with different anchor text built up over a long period of time. Sites grew in popularity slowly and incoming links increased subsequently at similar rates of growth. Google stepped in and used these patterns in a ranking algorithm to accurately value sites. It worked, almost too well. Google became so popular that people began to study what it takes to rank highly. They learnt it was all about incoming links so they started an unnatural linking process, creating link farms and chasing incoming links with a vengeance.

Google wants natural linking back and will reward those sites that appear to be popular based on natural linking. This is not an exact science of course but if you do these things you are on the right track:
  • Make sure your incoming links are not all carbon copies of the same keyword phrase. Vary the incoming anchor text with different phrases.
  • Make sure you get links from many sites with varied PageRank. Assess link swaps based on the site (content, relevance) asking for the exchange, not solely on the green PR bar at the top of the site.
  • Chase back links naturally, slowly increasing their number over time. If you go from 10 - 5000 backlinks in one month Google is going to think you are link farming and penalise you.
  • Don't get paranoid. Stressing over why your site won't get listed and pressuring other sites for link exchanges can drive you crazy. Take it easy and work on building a great site slowly, tell the right people about it and they will spread the word for you.
Google is telling us that they look for relevant, quality content on your websites, which is no surprise, and that PageRank is a good indicator of a website's "authority" and relevancy.

The key term here is authority. Those sites that have been online for a long time with established authority in their field wield the power. One link from an authority site can boost you to the top of the rankings but take it away and you can just as easily fade to the bottom of the rankings. Again the emphasis here is on establishing links from many sites with various rankings. If you build an amazing site eventually the authority sites in your field may just link to you anyway and won't that make you feel special!

How do you build an authority site? With hard work of course. Authority sites don't appear out of nowhere, they build their authority over time by consistently working on quality content and audience creation. Don't expect overnight success, if you want a popular website you have to work at it for years, not weeks.

Why Backlinks Are Important To Your Website

One of the most fun activities in web business, right up there with checking your traffic statistics, is monitoring your backlinks to see which sites are linking to you.

You must keep a close eye on your backlinks for a few reasons -
  • To see the calibre (quality) of the sites linking back to your site.
  • To see how high a PageRank (PR) these sites have.
  • And to view what keywords are used to link back.
Article Marketing For Backlinks

A few months ago I started testing article marketing. Since I write articles for my blog I thought it wouldn't be hard to re-post an article now and then at an article repository/distribution site.

The idea behind this is that people replicate your article on their own site or newsletter on the condition that they include your author biography with a link back to your site (you create your own author byline). If you write a popular article you can create hundreds of backlinks in a short period of time, not to mention increase your profile, as your article is distributed around the web.

Backlinks Are Constantly Changing

It's important to remember that whenever you assess your backlinks you are taking a snapshot in time. The Internet is quick, darn quick. You might experience two seconds in the spotlight when a prominent site links to yours, enjoy a traffic spike and gain a few new subscribers and backlinks. This is great when it happens but it's rare and only the most unique content or the most famous writers will produce this kind of result.

More often your backlink campaigning will bring in links on sites that, just like yours, not many people know about. However you shouldn't be discouraged. If the owners of these sites are, just like you, committed to a long term strategy of producing a great website resource or blog their site will also accumulate backlinks, gain exposure and rise in PageRank, which will in turn benefit your site. In this sense quality sites help each other rise together over time.

In a lot of ways the Internet is also very slow. Information dissemination may occur quickly but by design, search engines will not quickly drive traffic to your site. Steps you take today to improve your site's search engine performance will not necessarily have an impact until months later. Unique content, celebrity status and good networking can bring you quick traffic but if you are like most people you fall into the majority "working class" online and you will have to earn your rewards over time through hard work.

Assessing Your Backlinks

Google only updates PageRank every three months at best and during this time millions of new webpages are born that start off without any PR at all. When assessing your backlinks and you come across a page that appears to have a PR0 that has linked to you remember to check the PR of the home page because the subpage may have been created after the last PageRank update and consequently won't show any numbers on the green PR bar. You can expect once Google updates that the PageRank of the subpage will be one or two points below the main page and in fact once it is indexed by Google, which happens constantly, not every three months, will have SERP results way before it shows any visible PageRank.

When assessing your new backlinks be sure to browse through each site linking to you and check out the following points:
  1. How good is the content? - Is it original or all reproduced (you can spot reproduced content from the author bylines everywhere).
  2. How much activity is going on in terms of new topics for blogs (monthly, weekly, daily, multiple times a day) or new articles for standard websites. Also check out how much community activity is happening in forums and comments made to blogs.
  3. Lookup the backlinks of the site that has just linked to you to get an indication of it's popularity. Make sure you do this in Google, Yahoo! and MSN search if you want a good spread of data.
  4. If you are really doing deep research, conduct a history search in the Web Archives (http://web.archive.org)and see how long the site has been online and how it has changed over the years.
You can spend hours checking your backlinks so remember to return to productive work and not spend too much time indulging your ego by seeing who has linked to your site. Backlinks play an important part of a search engine optimization strategy providing one of the best metrics for assessing the results of your hard work.

10 Blog Traffic Tips

In every bloggers life comes a special day - the day they first launch a new blog. Now unless you went out and purchased someone else's blog chances are your blog launched with only one very loyal reader - you.

Maybe a few days later you received a few hits when you told your sister, father, girlfriend and best friend about your new blog but that's about as far you went when it comes to finding readers.

Here are the top 10 techniques new bloggers can use to find readers. These are tips specifically for new bloggers, those people who have next-to-no audience at the moment and want to get the ball rolling.

It helps if you work on this list from top to bottom as each technique builds on the previous step to help you create momentum. Eventually once you establish enough momentum you gain what is called "traction", which is a large enough audience base (about 500 readers a day is good) that you no longer have to work too hard on finding new readers. Instead your current loyal readers do the work for you through word of mouth.

Top 10 Tips

10. Write at least five major "pillar" articles. A pillar article is a tutorial style article aimed to teach your audience something. Generally they are longer than 500 words and have lots of very practical tips or advice. This article you are currently reading could be considered a pillar article since it is very practical and a good "how-to" lesson. This style of article has long term appeal, stays current (it isn't news or time dependent) and offers real value and insight. The more pillars you have on your blog the better.

9. Write one new blog post per day minimum. Not every post has to be a pillar, but you should work on getting those five pillars done at the same time as you keep your blog fresh with a daily news or short article style post. The important thing here is to demonstrate to first time visitors that your blog is updated all the time so they feel that if they come back tomorrow they will likely find something new. This causes them to bookmark your site or subscribe to your blog feed.

You don't have to produce one post per day all the time but it is important you do when your blog is brand new. Once you get traction you still need to keep the fresh content coming but your loyal audience will be more forgiving if you slow down to a few per week instead. The first few months are critical so the more content you can produce at this time the better.

8. Use a proper domain name. If you are serious about blogging be serious about what you call your blog. In order for people to easily spread the word about your blog you need a easily rememberable domain name. People often talk about blogs they like when they are speaking to friends in the real world (that's the offline world, you remember that place right?) so you need to make it easy for them to spread the word and pass on your URL. Try and get a .com if you can and focus on small easy to remember domains rather than worry about having the correct keywords (of course if you can get great keywords and easy to remember then you've done a good job!).

7. Start commenting on other blogs. Once you have your pillar articles and your daily fresh smaller articles your blog is ready to be exposed to the world. One of the best ways to find the right type of reader for your blog is to comment on other people's blogs. You should aim to comment on blogs focused on a similar niche topic to yours since the readers there will be more likely to be interested in your blog.

Most blog commenting systems allow you to have your name/title linked to your blog when you leave a comment. This is how people find your blog. If you are a prolific commentor and always have something valuable to say then people will be interested to read more of your work and hence click through to visit your blog.

6. Trackback and link to other blogs in your blog posts. A trackback is sort of like a blog conversation. When you write a new article to your blog and it links or references another blogger's article you can do a trackback to their entry. What this does is leave a truncated summary of your blog post on their blog entry - it's sort of like your blog telling someone else's blog that you wrote an article mentioning them. Trackbacks often appear like comments.

This is a good technique because like leaving comments a trackback leaves a link from another blog back to yours for readers to follow, but it also does something very important - it gets the attention of another blogger. The other blogger will likely come and read your post eager to see what you wrote about them. They may then become a loyal reader of yours or at least monitor you and if you are lucky some time down the road they may do a post linking to your blog bringing in more new readers.

5. Encourage comments on your own blog. One of the most powerful ways to convince someone to become a loyal reader is to show there are other loyal readers already following your work. If they see people commenting on your blog then they infer that your content must be good since you have readers so they should stick around and see what all the fuss is about. To encourage comments you can simply pose a question in a blog post. Be sure to always respond to comments as well so you can keep the conversation going.

4. Submit your latest pillar article to a blog carnival. A blog carnival is a post in a blog that summarizes a collection of articles from many different blogs on a specific topic. The idea is to collect some of the best content on a topic in a given week. Often many other blogs link back to a carnival host and as such the people that have articles featured in the carnival often enjoy a spike in new readers.

To find the right blog carnival for your blog, do a search at blogcarnival.com.

3. Submit your blog to blogtopsites.com. To be honest this tip is not going to bring in a flood of new readers but it's so easy to do and only takes five minutes so it's worth the effort. Go to Blog Top Sites, find the appropriate category for your blog and submit it. You have to copy and paste a couple of lines of code on to your blog so you can rank and then sit back and watch the traffic come in. You will probably only get 1-10 incoming readers per day with this technique but over time it can build up as you climb the rankings. It all helps!

2. Submit your articles to EzineArticles.com. This is another tip that doesn't bring in hundreds of new visitors immediately (although it can if you keep doing it) but it's worthwhile because you simply leverage what you already have - your pillar articles. Once a week or so take one of your pillar articles and submit it to Ezine Articles. Your article then becomes available to other people who can republish your article on their website or in their newsletter.

How you benefit is through what is called your "Resource Box". You create your own resource box which is like a signature file where you include one to two sentences and link back to your website (or blog in this case). Anyone who publishes your article has to include your resource box so you get incoming links. If someone with a large newsletter publishes your article you can get a lot of new readers at once.

1. Write more pillar articles. Everything you do above will help you to find blog readers however all of the techniques I've listed only work when you have strong pillars in place. Without them if you do everything above you may bring in readers but they won't stay or bother to come back. Aim for one solid pillar article per week and by the end of the year you will have a database of over 50 fantastic feature articles that will work hard for you to bring in more and more readers.

I hope you enjoyed my list of traffic tips. Everything listed above are techniques I've put into place myself for my blogs and have worked for me, however it's certainly not a comprehensive list. There are many more things you can do. Finding readers is all about testing to see what works best for you and your audience and I have no doubt if you put your mind to it you will find a balance that works for you.
